The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (French: Le scaphandre et le papillon) is a dramatic movie based on the memoir of Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir named the same. The movie speaks of the Bauby's life after suffering a massive stroke, on the day of 8 December 1995, at the age of 43, something that left him with a condition named "locked in syndrome".
The 1/3 of the movie is shown from the main character's, Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), from a first person perspective. The movie opens as Bauby wakes up from his three weeks coma during a hospital stay at Berck sur Mer, in France.
